Description and operationABS/HDC Brake Lamp Operation

The left and right hand brake lamp bulbs receive a feed from the header joint (C291-3) on a green and purple wire. The left hand brake lamp bulb is earthed through a direct earth (C556) by a black wire. The right hand brake lamp bulb is earthed through earth header joint (C551-7) by a black wire.

The high mounted brake lamp bulb receives a feed from the header joint (C291-4) on a green and purple wire. The earth path for the high mounted brake lamp bulb is by a black wire to the earth header joint (C551-8).

If a tow bar is fitted, a feed is taken from the header joint (C291-1) and is connected to the trailer connector (C499-6). The earth path from the trailer connector (C499-3) is on a black wire to earth header joint (C551-4).

ABS/HDC Brake Lamp Operation

A feed is taken from fuse 2 in the passenger compartment fusebox (C580-17) and is connected, via a header joint (C287-11/C287-13), to the brake lamp relay (C509-4) by a green wire.

When the ABS/HDC is engaged, the ABS modulator sends a signal, when appropriate, on a black and white wire which energizes the brake lamp relay. When the brake lamp relay is energized, the feed from the relay (C509-8) connects with the header joint (C287-1). From header joint (C287-3), the brake lamps operate as described in Brake Lamp Operation above.
