Starting System Description

When the starter switch is turned to the crank position III, battery voltage energizes the starter relay in the engine management relay module. This, in turn, energizes the starter motor solenoid which connects a feed direct from the battery to operate the starter motor.

Starting System Operation

Starter relay operation

A feed from the battery positive terminal (C192-2) is connected to the engine compartment fuse box (C632-1) on a red wire. Current passes through fuse link 6 and fuse link 3 of the engine compartment fuse box which are connected in series. Fuse link 3 (C571-2) is connected to the ignition switch (C028-3) by a brown and red wire.

When the starter switch is moved to the crank position III, a current flows from the ignition switch (C028-4) on a white and red wire to the passenger compartment fuse box (C588-4) and through Fuse 5. The current passes from the fuse box (C581-8) on a white and red wire to the engine management relay module (C154-6). The current passes through the starter relay, which energizes. The earth path from the starter relay is from the engine management relay module (C154-4) to the Central Control Unit (CCU) (C429-15) on a black and yellow wire. When the CCU determines that starter operation is allowed, the earth path is completed and the starter relay energizes.
