SUBJECT E.G R - Poor Performance, Excessive Smoke and Pulse Noise From Air Cleaner

MODEL AFFECTED VEHICLES

Defender, Discovery All dervitives fitted with 300 TDI engines Range Rover Classic

DETAIL

A small number of reports have been received regarding the Electronic Exhaust Gas Recirculation value, these reports indicate the following symptoms. Poor performance, misfire and excessive black smoke emitting from the exhaust.

Land Rover Diesesl engineers have developed a diagnostic procedure to assist in identifying the causes of these symptoms.

Note: This bulletin supersedes the previous 19/07/94/EN bulletin, The information in the E.G.R Diagonstic Wiring Diagram has been amended.

ACTION REQUIRED

In the event of a customer complaint follow the diagnostic procedure detailed below

PROCEDURE

E.E.G.R. Diagnostic procedure

Symptom Black smoke emitting from the exhaust, poor performance and misfire. ( This indicates full E.G.R at all conditions) 1) Disconnect vacuum pipe from the E.G.R valve. (The E.G.R valve is situated on the exhaust manifold.) if then symptoms improve an EGR problem exists, continue with the diagnostic procedure.

If symptoms persist check that the E.G.R valve is closing by connecting a voltmeter between pins 2 & 3 of the valve, allow engine to idle for at least 30 seconds, the voltage output should be 0.9 to 1.0 volts. If the voltage is within this range an E.G.R problem does not exist and indicates that there may be a problem with other components within the fuel system which require checking to determine the naturen of the fault.

2) Check that the vacuum pipes are connected correctly on the modulator valve, see diagram (A), the pipes and modulator valve connections are colour coded. The modulator valve connections are situatedon the left hand side of the inner wing near the bottle jack. 3) Check that the modulator valve to air cleaner breather pipe is not blocked, Remove the pipe from the air cleaner and ensure that the hole is drilled right through into the air cleaner. 4) Check that the engine electrical harness is correctly routed along the left hand side of the rocker cover and is not damaged.

Symptom Pulsing or thumping noise emitting from air cleaner. Cause: Faulty modulator valve. Remedy: Fit new modulator valve. -------------------------------------------------------------------If symptoms other than the above are found the symptoms must be interrogated by using Test book diagnostics. The diagnostic plug is situated near the Electronic Exhaust Gas Recirculation E.C.U and access is gained by removing the right hand side panel from the right hand footwell and removing the fascia access panel below the fascia. The E.C.U can then be seen at the rear of the fuse board. (Discovery and Range Rover). On Defender models the diagnostic plug and E.C.U can be found in the right hand footwell (gearbox tunnel side) behind the closing panel. Having carried out the testbook diagnostic if the fault cause is still not traced, then the wiring diagram and expected voltage diagnostic sheets included with this bulletin should be of assistance. Having carried out the diagnostic procedure and the fault cause is still not found contact Land Rover Service Help Desk.
