PROBLEM:
WINDSCREEN UPPER FINISHER - VIBRATION / WIND NOISE
The customer complains of a vibration / wind noise, heard from the upper windscreen area particularly at motorway speeds.
CAUSE:
Gaps between the upper windscreen finisher and glass, producing finisher vibration when subjected to wind pressure.
ACTION:
Vehicles prior to VIN YA 445550: The repair procedure below applies sealer under the finisher so that the finisher is secured to the glass and gaps eliminated.
Ensure the following are available before proceeding: • A blunt ended tool (non metallic) for insertion between screen finisher and glass. • A black polyurethane adhesive sealant e.g. ‘Betaseal Adhesive Sealant’.
1. Examine the windscreen finisher confirm existence of the gaps described. NOTE: If finisher is tapped by hand adjacent to any visual gap, the finisher may be heard tapping against the glass. (At speed this can produce the described vibration).

2. Thoroughly clean the upper area of windscreen including finisher. 3. Starting at the centre of screen finisher, insert a suitable (non metallic) blunt ended tool between finisher and glass to create a gap wide enough to insert the sealant applicator (see illustration). 4. Apply an even bead of black polyurethane adhesive sealant into the gap created, while dragging the tool outwards to allow applicator access. 5. Starting at the centre of the screen again, repeat application for opposite side. 6. Clean off any excess sealant which may have bled onto the finisher or glass. 7. Ensure that finisher lip is in contact with the glass with no remaining gaps.
Vehicles from VIN YA 445550: Use the following procedure to ensure that the upper finisher is fully seated to the vehicle. NOTE: References to right hand (RH) or left hand (LH) side of the vehicle follow the usual convention of a vehicle viewed forward from the rear. 8. Insert a thin plastic strip such as a credit card, between the finisher and the roof panel, (refer illustration). 9. Locate the LH side of each of the 8 finisher securing clips in turn and ensure that they are fully engaged by pushing as far as possible towards the right hand side of the vehicle, (as indicated by arrow in illustration). 10. Ensure that upper lip of finisher is correctly seated on roof panel after removal of the plastic strip. 11. Test for wind noise. If still evident, replace the upper finisher DCB101380. 12. To remove the finisher, reverse the process described at operation 9 pushing the securing clips towards the LH side of the vehicle to release the finisher. NOTE: An acceptable fit for the finisher is with a 0.5mm gap, finisher to screen, over a 120mm length at each end of the finisher, with a ‘touch fit’ to the screen over the remaining length of the finisher. 13. If wind noise persists, seal the finisher as described for vehicles prior to VIN 445550 in operations 1 to 7.
