MODEL AFFECTED VEHICLES
All Models All Derivatives Fitted With 200 Tdi Engines.
DETAIL
Investigations conducted by Product Supply engineers into returned 200 Tdi engines, replaced for high oil consumption, have found a number of cases where engines appear to have been replaced without any prediagnosis work being carried out. The procedure on page two is being issued for formal guidance to eliminate future cases being rejected on grounds of mis-diagnosis of a customers concern.
NOTE: This bulletin supercedes 055/93.
Note: The SRO information on the previous bulletin was incorrect. Remove issue1 of this bulletin and replace with issue 2.

All Models All Derivatives Fitted with 200 Tdi Engines.
Step 1 Verify customer concerns against instructions A and B below and record the facts on job card:A) Vehicle recorded mileage. NB . Any customer concern on vehicles with under 6,000 miles (10,000kms) should be noted only. Customers need to be reassured that during this period direct injection diesel engines will not have completed the running in period, but Dealers also need to ensure to review the concern at the 6,000 mile (10,000 kms) service interval. Consideration should also be given to oil drain back into sump and has customer allowed for this prior to checking oil level.
B) Type of use under which vehicle is reported to suffer high oil consumption. Motor way high speed driving - Cross country low ratio gear use - towing trailers - power take off equipment use NB. In cases where either of the above items occur this factor should be remembered when determining consumption figures. Either one of these will affect oil consumption substantially.
C) Record customers perceived oil consumption figures.
D) Record method of checking.
Step 2 Only after noting information from questions A B C and D in step 1 on job card should the following be carried out. A) Carry out visual integrity checks on all engine breather & intake systems, ensuring no leaks - blockages - or split hoses are present. NB . This engine requires a clean unimpaired breather system to reach its peak operating performance level. B) Carry out visual checks (top and underside of engine) for any oil leaks. C) On Discovery and Range Rover the dipstick tube must be dimensionally checked as follows: Remove the dipstick from the dipstick tube, measure from the top of the dipstick tube to the top of the bracket, this dimension should fall between 48-51 mm (1.89-2.00 inch). If the measured dimension is out of limits the dipstick tube should be replaced. Refer to section 12 of the workshop manual.
D) Repair any items found during A B or C checks.

Step 3 Again only proceed after Steps 1 and 2 have been fully carried out. Fully warm engine and park vehicle on level ground , switch off and allow engine to fully cool for the oil level to stabilise within the engine. NB . Dealers should allow 15 minutes minimum for this to be fully effective.
Step 4 Again only proceed after Steps 1,2 and 3 have been fully carried out. A) Adjust engine oil level to 'H' on the dip stick . NB 1 (one) Litre is required to move oil Level from 'L' to 'H'.
Step 5 Again only proceed after Steps 1,2,3 and 4 have been fully carried out. A) Request customer to use vehicle for further 1,000 miles (1600 kms) instructions should be given that no further oil is added and that the vehicle is operated as normal by the customer. B) After mileage is accumulated Dealer should check oil level as described in step 3. C) If consumption is calculated at less than 1,000 miles per pint (2857 kms per litre) Land Rover Technical Service should be contacted for further repair information. D) If consumption is above that figure Dealers should explain to the customer that this figure is normal. Dealers are requested to raise Product Reports for All cases of high oil consumption.
