BMW Diesel Hydraulic Tappet Noise

MODEL

New Range Rover Diesel Derivatives

DETAIL

If a tappet noise is evident on BMW diesel derivatives dealers should use the diagnostic procedure detailed below, The symptom, which is especially noticeable when the engine is cold, may be experienced on new vehicles which have been standing for some time.

ACTION REQUIRED

If a tappet noise is suspected when the engine is cold follow the procedure detailed below.

PARTS INFORMATION

STC 2144 Hydraulic tappet

PROCEDURE

1. Check the engine oil level and top-up as necessary Note: the vehicle should not have been running for at least 15 minutes and the vehicle should be standing on level ground. 2. Run the engine, varying the speed from 1000 to 3000 PM, for a period of 5 minutes. If the tappet noise is still evident repeat the procedure for a maximum of four times. 3. If the tappet noise is still evident, remove the rocker cover as described in the workshop manual section . Starting with number 1 cylinder, rotate the engine via the front crankshaft pulley so that the cam lobes are vertical ie the valves are in the closed position and the hydraulic tappet is not loaded. Using a clean plastic mallet or similar, press down on each tappet. Any ‘’soft’’ movement within the tappet indicates a fault and the tappet should be replaced. Repeat on the remaining cylinders and replace any tappets that are thought to be suspect. Replace the rocker cover and road test vehicle.
