BMW Oil Consumption High
MODEL
New Range Rover BMW Diesel Derivatives
DETAIL
We have received reports of high oil consumption on BMW Diesel engines, the oil consumption figures quoted by BMW for the Diesel engine fitted into New Range Rover are as follows.
1. During the ‘’running in’’ period, up to 4,600 miles (7,500Km). a consumption figure of 1.5 litre per 650 miles or 1,000Km is permissible. 2. After the initial ‘’running in’’ period ie in excess 6,000 miles or 9,600Km the permissible oil consumption should not exceed 0.7 litre per 650 mile or 1,000Km. 3. Before carrying out any repairs on the vehicle, associated with oil consumption, determine whether the concern can be attributed to items 1&2 above.

PROCEDURE
Follow the procedure below for accurate checking of oil consumption.
Checklist to determine possible causes of high oil consumption
Guidelines for measuring oil consumption
Oil consumption should not be measured until the vehicle has covered in excess of 6,000 miles or 9,6000Km, the engine must be checked for oil leaks, and rectified prior to oil consumption being measured.
1. Is the oil level check performed correctly?
The vehicle must to be on level ground when carrying out an oil level check.

If an engine is hot, allow the oil to drain back to the sump, this requires at least 10 minutes after the engine has been switched off.
Note: If you do not allow the oil to drain back, you may read a lower level on the dip stick. Should oil be added without allowing drain back, the oil level will exceed the ‘’maximum’’ mark resulting in overfilling.
2. Is the engine overfilled?
Engine oil exceeding the ‘’maximum’’ mark may harm the engine, it will be foamed by the splashing effect of the crankshaft and will enter the combustion process via the cylinder block ventilation system. High oil consumption as a result of overfilling may in most cases, be detected by a blue coloured exhaust smoke.
Recommendations Before adding engine oil let the level drop near the ‘’minimum’’ mark on the dipstick. The oil fill quantity between the ‘’minimum and maximum’’ mark is equivalent to approximately 1.01.5 litre’s.
Possible reasons for high oil consumption Is the rocker cover fitted correctly ? Air can be sucked into the engine overcharging the oil trap. Are the sealing rings on the dipstick missing or broken? refer to above. Is the intake air under pressure? Air intake snorkel, air filter dirty or clogged?. Carry out crank case compression test. Is the sealing ring on the injection pump drive shaft tight?. Oil can be sucked into the fuel system if this seal is insecure. Is the gasket and wire netting of the oil trap correctly fitted and intact?. This could cause an increased amount of oil to reach the combustion chamber, this will be finely atomised, therefore may not result in blue exhaust smoke.
BMW will only process warranty claims if the exact measurements are taken!. Once all checks have been carried out, contact Technical Service for further advise.
