Engine ECU - Warranty Returns
MODEL
New Range Rover BMW Diesel Derivatives
DETAIL
It has been noted by BMW on their component returns investigations that a number of ECU’s have been returned via the warranty system with burnt No 18/19 pins. This suggests an electrical overload has occurred. One of the possible reasons for this is that the ECU casing has come into contact with a ‘’live’’ terminal, i.e. Battery positive terminal.
ACTION REQUIRED
Information only: When removing an ECU, ensure the battery positive terminal does not make contact with the ECU casing.

PROCEDURE
When the engine ECU has to be removed for any reason, ensure that the casing does not come into contact with any live terminal especially the battery live terminal as this will immediately cause an electrical overload to the ECU resulting in ECU failure.
Failure to observe this instruction will render the unit uncheckable which may result in the displaced ECU being returned as no fault found.
