99MY Range Rover V8

PROBLEM:

1. Excessive “cabin boom” at idle on initial 99MY production vehicles. 2. Reduced air conditioning & engine cooling performance at idle in “low range” and high ambient temperatures.

CAUSE:

1. Initial idle speed point set on resonance point of cabin boom. Idle speed change reduces/eliminates problem. 2. Idle speed in “low range” set too low to give adequate coolant flow under high ambient temperature conditions. “Low range” idle speed change eliminates problem.

ACTION:

Update engine management system tune using Testbook. Testbook disc DRG0006B or later required

PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT:

DURING THE EMS RE-PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE, DO NOT UNDERTAKE ANY OTHER ACTIVITY AFFECTING THE VEHICLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM UNTIL THE PROCEDURE HAS BEEN SUCCESFULLY COMPLETED AND TESTED.

8. Follow the Testbook screen prompts for VIN number checking. Testbook will then check the contents of the ECM against data contained in the “Late Configuration Database” which is used to determine if the ECM requires updating. 9. The Testbook will then take you to the “ECM Hardware Change” screen and ask if you wish to change the ECM. This is not necessary, so select “No” to continue. 10. Testbook will then state that “no fixes” are available for the ECM. This is a confusing message, but select “Continue” 11. If a tune update is required, Testbook will take you to the “About To Program ECM” screen. Select “Continue”. 12. Testbook will then check it can re-programme the ECM via the “Available Programming Records” screen. Select “Continue” to get to the “Programming ECM” screen and the “Continue” again to start the re-programming. 13. This will take you into the “Downloading Program to the ECM” screen. The reprogramming process will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. DO NOT DISTURB THE VEHICLE DURING THIS PROCESS. 14. Upon completion of the re-programming process, Testbook will display the “ECM Programmed Successfully” screen. Follow the Testbook prompts for Ignition OFF, Ignition ON sequence and Testbook will check the ECM and update the ECM internal programming records (Programming History” screen). 15. Testbook will then check the vehicle immobilisation system status. Follow all Testbook prompts until you return to the “Range Rover V8 M5.2.1 ECM” screen.

The re-programming of the EMS ECM is now complete. However, as stated by Testbook during step 13 above, you should now clear all faults within the Automatic Gearbox ECM, as several are induced by the above EMS ECM process.

16. Return to the “System Selection” screen and select the “AutoBox Petrol” icon. 17. Follow the Testbook prompts and select the “Vehicle Maintenance” option, which will take you to the “Range Rover V8 GS8.87 TCM” screen. 18. Select the “Clear Fault Codes” icon and follow the Testbook prompts. 19. When you return to the “Range Rover V8 GS8.87 TCM” screen, the update is completed.
