RANGE ROVER V8 Petrol - Automatic transmission derivatives only.

PROBLEM:

Transmission Breather Pipe Modification

CAUSE:

Water can become captive in the end of the transmission breather tube installed as part of Recall A/D312 or in late production vehicles. If the water freezes, transmission fluid may be forced from the dipstick assembly into the engine bay.

ACTION:

On all vehicles modified or equipped with a transmission breather pipe which terminates at either the left or right inner wing well location, the routing of the hose must be adjusted and the end trimmed and positioned as per the procedures outlined below. As this rework only takes 12 minutes in most cases it can be completed whilst the customer waits.

PROCEDURE

MA300000 to WA402293 - VEHICLES REWORKED AS PART OF A/D312 HAVE TRANSMISSION BREATHER PIPES ROUTED AND TERMINATED AT THE LEFT HAND INNER WING.

PRODUCTION VEHICLES FROM VIN WA402294 to XA410482 RIGHT HAND DRIVE VEHICLES: Breather pipe routed to the left hand inner wing (Figure 1).

LEFT HAND DRIVE VEHICLES: Breather pipe routed to the right hand inner wing (Figure 2).

AFFECTED RANGE:

 Rover Group 1999

1. Open vehicle bonnet. 2. Transmission breather pipe routed to the left hand wing only - Remove the bolt securing the purge canister to provide access to the inner wing area. Do not remove hoses from the purge canister. 3. Disconnect battery. 4. Transmission breather pipe routed to the right hand wing only - Remove the three 8mm screws holding the fuse box, move to one side. 5. Transmission breather pipe routed to the right hand wing only - Lift expansion tank off its mounting and pull forward to allow access to right hand inner wing area. 6. Both variations - Remove the snap fit end of the breather from the right hand or left hand inner wing. (Figure 1 item A and Figure 2 Item A) 7. Disconnect the breather pipe from the two retaining clips along the engine bulkhead and the clip holding breather pipe to purge pipe. 8. Measure 180mm (7.5 inches) from the tip of the breather pipe snap end fitting. (Figure 1 and 2 item A) Remove and cut off breather pipe end.

CAUTION: Ensure that the angle of the cut is made so that the opening is oriented toward the inner wing wall.

9. Cut the breather pipe at a 45-degree angle as shown (Refer to Figure 3).

A = Clip B = Breather pipe C = Evaps pipe (Where fitted) D = 45 ° degree angle E = Engine bay harness F = Inner wing valance

10. Slit the top side of the pipe back about 15 to 20 mm (5/8 to ¾ inch) as illustrated in Figure 3.

RECALL ACTION BULLETIN No: A/D359 Rover Group 1999

11. Position so that modified end of the breather tube is approximately 25mm (1 inch) from the under-hood harness located in the corner of the inner wing area.(Figure 2).

CAUTION: It is important that the end of the breather tube has 25mm (1 inch) clearance from the electrical harness to ensure that there is no harness damage or any potential for contact with the breather tube.

12. If the breather pipe is in the production (right side) location, move the evaps hose clip outboard of the evaps hose shielding to better support the end of the breather pipe. 13. Install the purge canister if loosened. 14. Re-fit expansiion tank. 15. Re-fit Fuse box. 16. Re-connect battery.

CAUTION: Kinks, deformation or pinching of the breather tube can result in pressure buildup in the transmission. Fluid loss from the dipstick may result.

17. Verify that there are no kinks or deformations in the breather pipe created during the installation or modification process. 18. Endorse the Service record book
