Steering Column Knock (Side to Side)

MODEL

New Range Rover

DETAIL

We have received a number of reports that indicates a knock which emanates from the steering column when moving the steering column from side to side. Investigations have shown that this is a manufacturing issue, the cause has found to be the outer column tube oval which can contact the inner column tube.

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint of a knock on the steering column, move the steering column from side to side to determine if a knock is evident, if confirmed then follow the procedure detailed below.

PARTS INFORMATION

ANR 3751 Steering Column

PROCEDURE

Refer to the workshop manual section 57 steering column removal.

1. Sit in the vehicle and check for a column knock, by holding the steering wheel at each side and moving from side to side (see illustration ’A’) on second page. 2. If a knock can be confirmed then check the date code, this can be located at the bottom of the column, one of the securing bolts may have to be removed to confirm the date stamp, (see illustration ‘B’ on second page for location of date stamp denoted by the arrow)if the bolt is marked with white paint take no further action. 3. The date stamp is 3 or 4 digits long, the 2nd and 3rd digit is the week code,(ie 5 36 or 5 37 ). 4. If the week code is 36 or 37 then the steering column will need to be replaced if it exhibits a knock. 5.After replacing the steering column apply white paint to one of the fixing bolts as shown on illustration ‘B’ Continued......................
