DETAIL

The customer complains of a rattle/vibration noise from the gear lever area at engine speeds between 2500 and 3000 rpm in all forward gears. Investigation has found that this could be due to two conditions;

a) A rattle between gear lever and gaiter.

b) A rattle within gear lever.

ACTION REQUIRED

When assessing the vehicle, confirm which condition exists.

If a) is the cause, refer to T.I.B no. 07/02/96 page 2, for fitment of leather washer below the gear lever knob. If condition b) is confirmed, replace the gear lever assembly as detailed below.

PARTS INFORMATION

STC 3904K Gear lever kit- containing gear lever, gaiter and leather washer.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove centre console. 2. Remove sound insulator. 3. Remove 6 screws securing gear lever lower gaiter. 4. Remove 2 bolts securing gear lever and remove lever. 5. Change over lower gaiter to new gear lever. 6. Fit new gear lever to selector housing with lever cranked towards the passenger seat, i.e. away from the driver, torque 2 bolts to 25 Nm. 7. Refit gear lever fixing plate and torque 6 screws to 6Nm. 8. Refit sound insulator. 9. Remove old lever gaiter from ashtray panel and refit panel with new gaiter. 10. Refit centre console. 11. Ensure leather washer is fitted between gear lever gaiter and gear knob
