Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Testing and Inspection

COOLING FAN MOTOR

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

1. CHECK NO. 1 COOLING FAN MOTOR

(a)

Disconnect the No. 1 fan motor connector.

(b) Connect the battery and an ammeter to the No. 1 fan motor connector.

HINT:  Be careful if the positive and negative terminals of the battery are mistakenly connected to the connector in reverse, as the motor will
operate in the opposite direction.

(c)

Check that the No. 1 fan rotates smoothly, and then check the reading on the ammeter.
Standard current: 5.6 to 11.6 A at 20°C (68°F)
If the result is not as specified, replace the No. 1 cooling fan motor.

(d) Connect the No. 1 cooling fan motor connector.

2. CHECK NO. 2 COOLING FAN MOTOR

(a)

Disconnect the No. 2 fan motor connector.

(b) Connect the battery and an ammeter to the No. 2 fan motor connector.

HINT:  Be careful if the positive and negative terminals of the battery are mistakenly connected to the connector in reverse, as the motor will
operate in the opposite direction.

(c)

Check that the No. 2 fan rotates smoothly, and then check the reading on the ammeter.
Standard current: 5.6 to 11.6 A at 20° C (68° F)
If the result is not as specified, replace the No. 2 cooling fan motor.

(d) Connect the No. 2 cooling fan motor connector.
