Alternator - Insufficient Output May Cause Dead Battery

DESCRIPTION

If a customer drives in stop-and-go traffic with heavy electrical loads, the output of the 65A alternator may not be sufficient. This condition may create a
dead battery even though there is no problem with the charging system or the battery.

If the above conditions are suspected, use the optional 70A alternator instead of the normal 65A alternator. A joint harness and band are now available as
service parts for the 1988-89 929 so the 70A alternator can be installed. The 70A alternator is installed in production on the 1990 929.

(*) Mazda finish line battery (0000 80 224F) must be
used with the 70A Alternator.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

NOTE:
Check the charging system (Workshop Manual, Category G). Recharge the battery by charging boost current (refer to Service Bulletin, Category 5, no.
020/88).

1)

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2)

Replace the alternator with a 70A model.

3)

Install the joint harness with a tie-wrap as shown.
