A/T - Fluid Leak at Servo Cover

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKING AT SERVO COVER

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINs
2001-2002 Truck / B-Series with automatic transmission.

DESCRIPTION

Some trucks equipped with automatic transmission and built between 6-01-2001 and 3-31-2002 may exhibit a fluid leak at a transmission servo cover
(Intermediate and/or Overdrive). This occurs primarily in cold conditions. There has been a change in the servo cover design. To repair this concern,
perform the procedure below to correct this concern.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1.

Verify customer concern.

2.

Check the transmission fluid level and condition.

If fluid level is low, and fluid is not burned, proceed to STEP 3.

If fluid shows signs of damage due to low fluid level, no engagement or badly burnt; the transmission may need additional repairs or
replacement, follow normal workshop manual diagnosis and repair procedures.

3.

Remove the catalytic converter.

4.

Remove the Control Valve Body Assembly according to Workshop Manual (section 05-13 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION).

WARNING:

Do not allow the band adjustment screw to back out completely or the band strut will fall out of position.

5.

Remove and discard the band lock nut, then back out the adjustment screw three to four turns.

6.

Install Special Tool 307-340 (49-UN01-144).

7.

Tighten the Special Tool to compress the servo spring. 

CAUTION :

The servo cover is under spring tension.

8.

Remove the servo cover retaining ring.

9.

Slowly remove the tension on the J-hook nut and remove the servo cover compressor.

NOTE:

Do not allow the piston to come out of the bore. 

10.

Tap lightly on the covert then remove the cover.

11.

Lubricate servo cover seal and install new servo cover assembly onto piston and into the piston bore.

NOTE:

Do not damage the cover seals during installation. Do not press servo cover and seals past the relief hole in the case or the seals may be
damaged.

12.

Install Special Tool 307-340 (49-UN01-144)

13.

Tighten the Special Tool to compress the servo cover and spring.

14.

Install the retaining ring.
