Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (CMP)
Detects position of camshaft and sends signal to PCM.
Operation
PCM uses for synchronizing firing of sequential fuel injectors.
NOTE:

Uses a Variable Reluctance type sensor. CMP identifies when #1 piston is at top dead center of its compression stroke.

If the camshaft position sensor or circuit has an open or short, Diagnostic Trouble Code No. P0340 is output.

If the camshaft position sensor circuit fails, the engine may stall and not restart.
