Cylinder Head Gasket: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Drain engine coolant and remove air cleaner assembly.
3.
Remove right front engine bracket, then the exhaust manifold with gasket.
4.
Remove water bypass pipe, then the carburetor and intake manifold. After disconnecting fuel hoses, plug them to prevent leakage.
5.
Remove cylinder head cover, then the rocker arm and rocker shaft assembly. Before removing rocker arm and rocker shaft assembly, install
hydraulic lash adjuster holder 49U012001 or equivalent to prevent adjusters from falling. Do not remove rocker arm/rocker shaft bolts from shaft.
6.
Remove semicircular packing from front of camshaft.
7.
Remove distributor drive gear and bolt. When removing camshaft sprocket bolt, counterhold crankshaft pulley bolt with suitable wrench.
8.
Remove camshaft and rear circular packing.
9.
Remove cylinder head to timing chain case attaching bolts.

Remove cylinder head attaching bolts, loosening in proper sequence, Fig. 20, then remove cylinder head and gasket.
11.
Remove any dirt or grease from top surface of cylinder block.
12.
Apply a thin coat of suitable sealant to cylinder block and chain cover contact surfaces, then place new gasket and cylinder head in position. Do
not apply sealant to cylinder head gasket.

Tighten cylinder head bolts in proper sequence, Fig. 16. Bolts No. 1 through 10 are torqued to 65-72 ft.lbs. on cold engine, or 72-79 ft.lbs. on hot
engine, and bolts No. 11 and 12 are torqued to 11-16 ft.lbs.
14.
Apply engine oil to camshaft journals, then install camshaft, align dowel pin and install camshaft sprocket.
15.
Install distributor drive gear and tighten lock bolt by hand. Tighten distributor drive gear after installing and tightening camshaft caps.

Insert right and left rocker shafts into front camshaft cap and align mating mark on front of rocker arm shaft with mating mark on front camshaft
cap, Fig. 17.
