Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
The sharp edges of the driveshaft snap ring can slice
or puncture the oil seal. Use care when removing driveshaft from transaxle.
1. Drain transaxle oil into suitable container.
2. Remove stabilizer control link upper nut, Fig. 8.
3. Knock crimped portion of locknut outward using suitable small chisel and hammer, then lock hub by applying brakes and remove locknut.
4. Remove lower arm ball joint bolt, then upper lateral link ball joint. Suspend upper lateral link.
5. Remove tie rod end ball joint as described under Power Steering Gear.
6. Remove driveshaft as follows:
a. Separate lefthand driveshaft from transaxle by prying with suitable bar inserted between outer ring and transaxle, Fig. 9.
b. Separate righthand driveshaft from joint shaft by hammering on suitable brass or copper bar inserted between them, Fig. 10.
c. If driveshaft will not come out of front wheel hub easily, install an already discarded nut onto driveshaft so nut is flush with end of driveshaft.
Tap nut with suitable copper hammer to loosen driveshaft from front wheel hub.
7. Remove clip.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Turn clip so opening is facing upward, then apply grease to driveshafts.
b. Push driveshaft into transaxle (lefthand side) or transaxle (righthand side).
c. After installation, pull front hub outward to confirm driveshaft is securely held by clip.
d. Install and stake new locknut, Fig. 5.
