Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair
Rear Differential Pinion Seal
1. Jack up the vehicle and support it on safety stands.
2. Drain the differential gear oil.
3. Remove the propeller shaft.
4. Before loosening the flange locknut, measure and record the rotation starting torque of the drive pinion (within range of the drive pinion and ring
gear backlash).
5. Hold the companion flange by using the Special Service Tool (SST) and remove the locknut.
6. Remove the companion flange by using the SST.
7. Remove the oil seal.
8. Apply lithium-based grease to a new oil seal lip and install it by using the SST.
