Battery Lamp/Indicator: Testing and Inspection
When performing any type of testing to the Ford FX-15 alternator, refer to COMPONENT LOCATIONS/ALTERNATOR TERMINAL
LOCATIONS for test terminal locations.
1.
The charge indicator lamp system is normal under the following conditions:
a. With the ignition switch in the Off position, indicator light is Off.
b. With the ignition switch in the Run position with the engine not running, indicator lamp is On.
c. With the ignition switch in the Run position with the engine running, indicator lamp is Off.
2.
If the charge indicator lamp does not operate as specified, proceed as follows:
a. Check and replace indicator lamp bulb if necessary.
b. If the indicator lamp does not light, disconnect wiring connector from the regulator.
c. Connect a jumper wire from wiring connector terminal I to battery negative terminal.
d. Turn ignition switch to Run position with engine not running. If indicator lamp does not light, and bulb condition is good, refer to Starting
and Charging/Charging System/Testing and Inspection/Procedures.
e. If indicator lamp lights, remove jumper wire then connect to regulator.
f.
Connect voltmeter negative lead to battery negative terminal, then connect voltmeter positive terminal to regulator terminal A. Battery voltage
should be indicated.
g. If battery voltage is not present, service voltage regulator A circuit.
h. If battery voltage is present, clean and retighten ground connections to engine, alternator and regulator.
i.
If, with ignition switch in the Run position and the engine not running, indicator lamp still does not light, replace regulator.
