Protege LX L4-1.6L DOHC (2000)
1. Set the rack to the center position.
2. Tighten the adjusting cover to 20 Nm (2.0 kgf-m, 14 ft. lbs.) 3 times, then return it 23° using the Special Service Tool (SST).
3. Apply sealant to the threads of the locknut.
4. Attach the locknut.
5. Measure the pinion torque using the SST and a pull scale.

If not as specified, repeat Step 2 through 5.
Standard
Center of rack ± 90°
1.0 - 1.3 Nm (10 - 14 kgf-cm, 9 - 12 inch lbs.)
Pull scale reading
10 - 13 N (1.0 - 1.4 kgf, 2.3 - 3.0 lbs.)
6. Install the locknut using the SST.
Tightening torque
40 - 49 Nm (4.0 - 5.0 kgf-m, 29 - 36 ft. lbs.)
