A/T - Engine Stalls Upon Gear Engagement

2005-2006 and 2008 Tribute vehicles equipped with Automatic Transaxle (ATX) built from Aug. 1, 2004 to Feb. 15, 2007
DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may exhibit an engine stall when coming to a stop or when engaging the ATX into drive or reverse. This condition may be intermittent,
and often occurs after extended drives. There may be no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored. This concern may be caused by internal wear of the
torque converter, which prevents it from unlocking. A modified torque converter is available.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Verify customer concern.
2.
Check automatic transmission fluid (ATF) level and add if necessary.
3.
Inspect and repair all non-transaxle codes according to Workshop Manual.
4.
Use M-MDS to monitor PIDs (Parameter Identification) for TCSLIPACT as stall occurs.

If slip is greater than 20 RPM, stalling is not transaxle related. Repair according to Workshop Manual procedure for engine stalling.

If there is less than a 20 RPM difference between the two, torque converter clutch (TCC) internal failure is the most likely cause. Proceed to
Step 5.
5.
Raise vehicle safely on hoist.
6.
Drain automatic transmission fluid (ATF) from transaxle assembly.
7.
Remove automatic transaxle assembly according to Workshop Manual (section 05-13 TRANSAXLE - 3.0L (4V) or TRANSAXLE - 2.3L).
NOTE:
Check the rotation of the torque converter in the bell housing. A failed torque converter will be difficult to rotate.
8.
Remove torque converter from bell housing.
9.
Install new torque converter and reinstall automatic transaxle assembly according to Workshop Manual (section 05-13 TRANSAXLE - 3.0L (4V)
or TRANSAXLE - 2.3L).
10.
Refill automatic transaxle assembly with MERCON(R)V ATF.
11.
Back-flush transaxle cooler system according to Workshop Manual (section 05-13 TRANSAXLE FLUID COOLER - BACKFLUSHING AND
CLEANING).
12.
Inspect for proper ATF level.
13.
Verify repair.
