2009 Tribute with 6F35 Automatic Transaxle built before August 29, 2008
DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may exhibit a continuous knocking noise heard with the engine running and the vehicle stationary or moving slowly. The noise is heard in
drive and/or reverse, and is not typically heard in neutral and/or park. This noise may be due to the torque converter assembly.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
If the vehicle has a 3.0L V6, automatic transmission, and the noise is heard in all four (4) positions (P, R, N, D), then this procedure does not apply.
1. Verify the noise is a continuous knocking noise heard from the rear of the engine and/or front of transaxle with the engine running and the vehicle
stationary or moving slowly.
- Is the noise present in (D) and/or (R), but not in (N) and/or (P)? If yes, proceed to Step 2.
- Is the noise heard in all four (4) positions (P, R, N, D)? If yes, this repair procedure does not apply. Refer to MS3 online instructions or Workshop
Manual section 05-01).
2. Use chassis ears to listen for noise at the bottom of the transaxle near the torque converter access hole. If the noise is present, replace the torque
converter according MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual (section 05-13A TRANSAXLE - 2.5L REMOVAL) AND (section 05-13A
TRANSAXLE - 2.5L INSTALLATION) OR (section 05-13A TRANSAXLE - 3.0L REMOVAL) AND (section 05-13A TRANSAXLE - 3.0L
INSTALLATION).
3. Verify repair.
