Transmission Cooler: Description and Operation

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE COOLING

MOTOR ELECTRONICS COOLING SYSTEM (MECS)

The Tribute uses a pump driven cooling system - the Motor Electronics Cooling System (MECS). This system transfers heat generated by the
electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT) and the hybrid electric vehicle DC/DC converter to the atmosphere. The system uses
a coolant-to-air radiator design.

The MECS cools:

the eCVT power electronics

-

the electric motors inside the eCVT

-

the DC/DC Converter

The MECS consists of:

An additional M/E radiator filled with Mazda Premium Gold Engine Coolant - service part number VC-7- A (except CA and OR - VC-7-B). The
service interval is 5 years/100,000 miles for the first change, then 3 years,/50,000 miles for subsequent changes.

A PCM-controlled 12 volt electric coolant pump is mounted near the bottom-rear of the radiator assemblies.

A separate degas bottle is part of a single assembly that includes the engine cooling degas bottle.

Hoses.

A coolant temperature sensor located on the eCVT.

The M/E cooling system bleed hole is located on the top of the eCVT.

There is no conventional transmission cooler on the Tribute Hybrid because the MECS cools the transmission.

MOTOR ELECTRONICS COOLING PUMP

The motor electronics cooling system is required to maintain an acceptable temperature for the transaxle and the DC/DC converter. The system
temperature is monitored by the motor electronics coolant temperature (MECT) sensor, which is an input to the PCM. The PCM commands the MECP
using the MECP relay. The MECP is commanded on whenever the traction battery contactors are closed. The coolant in the system flows in a loop from
the MECP, to the DC/DC converter, to the top hose port of the motor electronics radiator, out of the motor electronics radiator bottom hose port, into the
transaxle, and back into the MECP. The cooling system has a degassing system built into the loop that bleeds air/gases into the coolant reservoir.
