HARSH/DELAYED UPSHIFTS AFTER TSS SENSOR REPLACEMENT

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2001-2002 Tributes equipped with 3.0L V6 engine

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles equipped with the CD4E Transaxle may exhibit harsh and delayed 1-2/2-3 upshifts along with DTCs for gear ratio errors after Transaxle
or Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor have been replaced. The DTCs may include 628, 642, 645, 646, 647, 648, P0731, P0732, P0734, P0741, and
P1744.

This may be caused by installing an incorrect TSS sensor. These vehicles should use a HiStat TSS sensor color-coded black (see Parts Information)

If the condition occurs after servicing the Transaxle or TSS sensor, refer to the Parts Information and ensure the correct TSS is used. Note that the TSS
has the Ford engineering part number on it. Also note that the TSS kit includes an instruction sheet, TSS sensor, and correct length (16 mm) bolt.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1.

Verify concern.

2.

Remove the existing TSS sensor from the CD4E pump body according to Workshop Manual (section 05-13 TURBINE SHAFT SPEED (TSS)
SENSOR).

3.

Reinstall the original TSS sensor if available or install the correct TSS sensor as indicated in the Parts Information.

4.

Clear all codes and verify repair.

5.

If the condition still exists, follow normal diagnostics as listed in the appropriate model year Workshop Manual.
