Removing and installing front axle shafts
Modification notes
Modified tightening torque for twelve-point collared nut, front axle shaft to front axle shaft flange: see step 1
Bolted conection, front axle shaft to front axle shaft flange, modified: new step 2 included.
Removing and installing
Note:
Replace self-locking nuts and bolts.
Installation
1. On first version, detach twelve-point collared nut (61) from front axle shaft
Caulker for securing twelve-point collared nut
2. On second version detach hexagon collared bolt (61a) from front axle shaft
3. Remove lower engine compartment covering
4. Detach brake hose bracket (arrow) on shock absorber shackle
5. Detach retaining bracket (22b) of torsion bar (22) from both lower wishbones (4)
6. Pull rubber mount (22a) off torsion bar
7. Detach linkage for headlamp range adjustment (80) on right side (if fitted)
8. Press tie rod joint (10a) out of steering knuckle
9. Press supporting joint (7) out of steering knuckle (5)
On installation: replace self-locking nut.
10. Detach shock absorber (11) from lower wishbone (4) nut (11u)
11. Slacken nuts for lower wishbone (4) on front axle carrier
On installation: Tighten the nuts only when the vehicle is standing on its wheels in curb condition
12. Press torsion bar (22) over retaining bracket (arrow) on lower wishbone (4) using a suitable tool
13. Pull steering knuckle (5) outwards and slide front axle shaft (60) out of front axle shaft flange
Tie steering knuckle to one side using suitable wire.
14. Press out and remove right front axle shaft
When sliding out the front axle shaft (60) shaft, push the wishbone down using a suitable tool.
Do not damage the rubber boot and rpm sensor rotor.
To avoid damaging the wheel bearings, the vehicle must not be moved on its wheels with the front axle shaft removed.
