Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Remove left frame cross braces (36)
2. Remove complete exhaust system (105)
3. Remove exhaust heat shield (105c)
4. Remove tunnel closing plate (108)
5. Loosen propeller shaft clamping nut (106c)
6. Remove propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a)
7. Remove propeller shaft (106) at rear axle center assembly

WARNING:  Risk of accident when lifting a rear axle half 

8. Remove rear axle shafts (37) at connecting flange

-

Discard retaining bolts

NOTE:  Vehicle must not lift off the platform surface

9. Move rear axle shaft into approximately the horizontal position and push together

Fasten rear axle shaft securely on rear axle carrier

10. Remove the pinion shaft collared nut (40a)
11. Remove the joint flange (41), if required use puller tool No. 129 589 01 33 00, or equivalent to remove flange

Discard O-ring seal

12. Using a suitable tool, remove the oil seal (42)

13. Check the oil thrower ring (43c) as follows:

a. Check for correct fit
b. If it is a loose fit, replace the oil thrower and, if necessary, press onto the collared pinion nut using an alignment tool 

INSTALLATION

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

Replace the breather

-

Replace axle shaft to flange bolts

-

Replace O-ring seal on joint flange

-

Replace all self locking nuts or bolts
