About the Mountaineer
The Mountaineer (1997–2010) was Mercury's first SUV, an upmarket counterpart of the five-door Ford Explorer, built in Louisville, Kentucky. There was no version of the three-door Explorer Sport or the Sport Trac.
What these manuals cover
- 1998–2001: (first generation) the 4.0-litre V6 and the 5.0-litre V8
- 2002–2010: (second and third generations) the 4.0 V6, including flex-fuel, and the 4.6-litre V8
