Brake Rotor/Disc: Testing and Inspection
Runout
DESCRIPTION
Every time the brakes are serviced, check the front disc brake rotors for scoring runout, parallelism and thickness.
PROCEDURES
1. Ensure that the front wheel bearing play is within specification.
2. Secure the front disc brake rotor to the wheel hub with at least two lug nuts.
Measure Disc Brake Rotor Runout
3. Use dial indicator with bracketry TOOL-4201-C or equivalent to measure the front disc brake rotor runout. Center the dial indicator on the braking
surface.
Maximum front disc brake rotor runout is 0.07mm (0.0028 inch).
If the runout is not within specification, position the front disc brake rotor on the hub to obtain the lowest possible runout.
^
Shift the front disc brake rotor one hole and secure the rotor to the wheel hub with at least two lug nuts.
^
Use dial indicator with bracketry TOOL-4201-C or equivalent to measure the front disc brake rotor runout.
Repeat these steps until a minimum front disc brake rotor runout is achieved.
4. If the front disc brake rotor runout is still not within specification, refinish the front disc brake rotor surface.
