Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Remove the front valve cover or the rear valve cover as required.
2. Loosen the rocker arm shaft bolts in two steps.

CAUTION:  Loosening the rocker arm shaft bolts in one step may distort or break the rocker arm shaft.

3. Remove the rocker arm shaft and rocker arm assemblies from the cylinder head.

NOTE:  Mark the location of the rocker arm shaft' to ease installation.

4. Secure the valve tappet to the rocker arm shaft support using mechanic's wire.

NOTE:  Use mechanic's wire to hold the valve tappets in the rocker arm shaft support during removal.

5. Remove the rocker arm shaft support with the valve tappets.

NOTE:  Make a note of rocker arm shaft support location prior to removal.

6. Remove the mechanic's wire from the valve tappets.

NOTE:  Label the valve tappet position during removal if any are to be reused.

7. Remove the valve tappets from the rocker arm shaft support.

INSTALLATION

1. Coat the friction surfaces of the valve tappets with clean engine oil.
2. Install the valve tappets into the rocker arm shaft support.

NOTE: If reusing the original valve tappets, ensure that they are installed in the same position from which they were removed.

3. Secure the valve tappets to the rocker arm shaft support using mechanic's wire.

NOTE:  Use mechanic's wire to hold the valve tappets in the rocker arm shaft support during installation.

4. Install the rocker arm shaft and rocker arm assemblies on the rocker arm shaft support.
