Subframe: Removal and Replacement

Replacing Front Axle Carrier

31 11 001 Replacing front axle carrier

Note: 
Replace self-tapping screws for mounting following components on front axle/engine carriers.

Steering gear

^

Bracket, control arm / retaining bar, stabilizer

^

Bumper bracket

^

Bracket, ride-height sensor

^

Front axle carrier (if replacing engine carriers)

Warning!

Danger to life!
Mount securing fixture for vehicle on lifting platform to prevent the vehicle from slipping off or tilting down.

Necessary preliminary tasks: 
^

Remove both tie rod ends from swivel bearing

^

Remove both control arms from swivel bearing and front axle carrier

^

Remove both stabilizer links from stabilizer

^

Lower front axle support

Modify stabilizer. 
If necessary, modify ride-height sensor. 
Modify both control arms. 
Modify steering gear. 
Modify both bumper brackets.

Installation:
Use previous front axle carrier as a template for modifying or replacing small parts.

After installation:

Perform chassis alignment check See: Maintenance/Alignment/Service and Repair

Version with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC): Carry out steering angle sensor adjustment

Note: 
Only cars with DSC are fitted with a steering angle sensor (integrated in the steering column switch cluster).
