Ignition Coil Pack: Testing and Inspection
Coil Testing
1.
With ignition switch in the off position, disconnect the primary wires from the ignition coil.
2.
Using an appropriate ohm meter with a minimum of 10 megohm impedance, connect the positive test lead to the primary coil terminal #3.
3.
Connect the negative test lead of the ohm meter to primary coil terminal #4.
Primary Coil Resistance
Standard Value:
0.67 - 0.81 ohm
4.
Leaving the positive test lead of the ohm meter connected to primary coil terminal #3, connect the negative test lead of the ohm meter to primary
coil terminal #2.
Primary Coil Resistance
Standard Value:
0.67 - 0.81 ohm
5.
Leaving the positive test lead of the ohm meter connected to primary coil terminal #3, connect the negative test lead of the ohm meter to primary
coil terminal #1.
Primary Coil Resistance
Standard Value:
0.67 - 0.81 ohm
6.
Connect the negative ohm meter test lead to cylinder #1 coil, secondary terminal. Connect the positive ohm meter test lead to cylinder #4 coil,
secondary terminal.
Secondary Coil Resistance
Standard Value:
11.3k - 15.3k ohms
7.
Connect the negative ohm meter test lead to cylinder #2 coil, secondary terminal. Connect the positive ohm meter test lead to cylinder #5 coil,
secondary terminal.
Secondary Coil Resistance
Standard Value:
11.3k - 15.3k ohms
8.
Connect the negative ohm meter test lead to cylinder #3 coil, secondary terminal. Connect the positive ohm meter test lead to cylinder #6 coil,
secondary terminal.
Secondary Coil Resistance
Standard Value:
11.3k - 15.3k ohms
9.
Inspect the primary and secondary coil connections and wiring.
10.
Inspect the ignition coil for signs of physical damage such as:
Cracks in the case
Signs of leakage
Carbon tracks
