The 1983 Cordia/Tredia steering shaft joint boot has been redesigned to reduce the possibility of the boot rubbing against the dash panel cover. The
change became effective in production late in July, 1983. The new boot may be replaced with one of earlier design, and the part number (#MB 192548)
remains the same.
When reassembling the steering shaft on a car equipped with one of the newdesign boots, it is important to apply multi-purpose grease liberally around
the lip of the boot where it meets the dash panel cover. This prevents abrasion and wear as the steering shaft turns. The illustration below shows the
difference in shapes of old and new boots and the location where the grease is to be applied whenever the new-design boot and the dash panel cover are
assembled.
