As mentioned in the "Cambered Road Surfaces" section on the causes of steering drift, customers driving in the left or right lane on a cambered road may
have to maintain a slight counter-steer to keep the steering wheel in a straight ahead position. This effort may cause fatigue in some drivers, and can be
the cause of a complaint. If your customer's concerns are related to driving fatigue, you will be able to correct the power steering effort through
replacement of selected components. Details on component replacement are in the "Corrective Procedures for Steering Drift" section of this bulletin.
Verifying the Steering Drift Complaint
Before correcting steering drift, you must address the complaint(s) leading the customer back to the dealership. Discuss the conditions with the customer
under which the steering drift is observed.

On a cambered (crowned) road?

On a flat road?

During high cross-winds?
Also, ask the customer if they feel they must exert excessive steering wheel force (countersteer) when the drift is observed.
Thorough customer questioning will allow you to determine when the steering drift is observed (helping you to pin-point the proper corrective
procedure), and also gives you an understanding of the customer's expectations for the repair.
Since some causes of steering drift are not vehicle caused (cambered road surfaces), a frank discussion with the customer is just as important as making
corrections to the vehicle.
After talking to the customer, perform your road test (without the customer) and attempt to duplicate the steering drift. "Once around the block" isn't
enough. The vehicle must be driven on several different surfaces to get a complete understanding of the steering drift cause(s).
Once the causes of steering drift have been confirmed (through customer questioning and the test drive) perform the following corrective procedures
based on need. In other words, not every procedure will need to be performed on every returned vehicle.
