STEERING WHEEL CENTERING - PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION PROCEDURE
PURPOSE
To prevent customer complaints of off-center steering wheels, MMSA is asking that all Diamante cars be given a careful check during Pre-Delivery
Inspection to ensure the steering wheel is perfectly centered. This bulletin provides detailed procedures for centering the steering wheel on the 1992
Diamante.
The procedures consist of two steps:
1.
Road-test the vehicle to determine if the steering wheel is off-center.
2.
If adjustment is required, index the steering wheel to center it and/or adjust the tie-rod ends for minor centering adjustments.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
If a Diamante steering wheel needs to be aligned during Pre-Delivery Inspection, correct the condition, and submit a separate "W" warranty claim.
SRS SERVICING PRECAUTIONS
CAUTION:
Since this procedure may involve removing the air bag module from the steering wheel, certain precautions are necessary:
1.
Never attempt to disassemble or repair the air bag module or clock spring.
2.
Do not drop the air bag module or allow it to contact water, grease or oil.
3.
When the air bag module is removed from the steering wheel, it should be removed from the interior of the vehicle, set on a clean dry flat surface
and placed so the that the pad surface is facing upward. Do not place anything on top of it.
4.
Do not expose the air bag module to temperatures above 200 degrees F.
5.
Electronic components in the SRS control unit can be damaged by electrical voltage surges. The procedures described in this bulletin require that
the ignition key be removed before performing certain operations. This ensures that the ignition switch is in the "OFF" position.
Determining How Far the Steering Wheel Is Off-Center.
1.
Take along chalk or tape on the road test. Carefully drive straight ahead on an uncambered (no road crown) level surface. When you are sure the
vehicle is driving straight, mark the steering wheel hub and column jacket with a chalk or tape line (Figure 1).
2.
Stop the vehicle. Line up the marks on the hub and column jacket.
