Compression Check: Testing and Inspection
Ensure engine oil, starter motor and battery are in satisfactory condition. When checking compression, engine coolant should be at normal operating
temperature, spark plugs should be removed and throttle valve should be wide open. Perform engine compression pressure test as follows:
1. Ensure lights, electric cooling fan and accessories are OFF.

2. Disconnect distributor or crankshaft position sensor, Fig. 1.
3. Install compression gauge in spark plug holes.
4. With throttle valve fully open, crank engine at 250-400 RPM and record compression pressure.
5. Standard compression pressure is 185 psi.
6. Limit compression pressure is 139 psi.
7. Difference between cylinders should not exceed 14 psi.
8. Connect distributor or crankshaft position sensor connector.
9. Install spark plugs and spark plug wires.
10. Erase diagnostic trouble code with scan tool or reconnect battery after ten seconds or more of disconnection. Code will set when crankshaft
position sensor is disconnected.
