Oil Pump: Service and Repair
Silent Shaft, Oil Pump & Front Case

    Refer to Fig. 53, when removing silent shaft, oil pump and front case. Keep silent shaft in position by inserting a screwdriver through plug hole in left
side of cylinder block and remove oil pump driven gear securing bolt.

1.

Inspect oil holes for clogging and clean if necessary.

2.

Inspect left silent shaft front bearing section for wear, damage and seizure and replace as necessary.

3.

Inspect front case for cracks or other damage and replace as necessary.

4.

Inspect oil seal lip for wear, damage or deterioration and replace as necessary.

5.

Inspect journal for seizure, damage or contact with bearing, replace as necessary.

6.

Inspect silent shaft oil clearance. Clearance should be as follows:
a. Front- Right (0.0012-0.0024 inch).
b. Front- Left (0.0008-0.0020 inch).
c. Rear- Right and left (0.0020-0.0036 inch).
d. If clearance is out of specification, replace silent shaft bearing, silent shaft or front case assembly as necessary.

Position oil pump gear to front case and rotate to ensure smooth rotation with no looseness. Ensure there is no ridge wear on contact surface
between front case and gear surface of oil pump cover.

8.

Measure side clearance. Clearance should be 0.0031-0.0055 inch (drive gear) and 0.0024-0.0047 inch (driven gear).

9.

Ensure oil cooler bypass valve moves smoothly on engines with air cooling type oil cooler.

10.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Using oil seal installer tool, No. MD998375-01 or equivalent, install crankshaft front oil seal into front case.
b. Apply engine oil amply to gears and align mating marks, then install oil pump drive and driven gear.
c. Coat threads of oil pressure gauge unit and oil pressure switch with 3M ATD sealant, No. 8660 or equivalent, and install in that order avoiding

overtightening.

d. Apply engine oil to outer surface of right silent shaft rear bearing, then install ensuring oil hole of bearing is aligned with oil hole of cylinder

block.

e. Apply engine oil to left silent shaft rear bearing outer surface and bearing hole in cylinder block and install. Left bearing has no oil holes.
