Drive Belt - Adjustment
SUBJECT:
DRIVE BELT ADJUSTMENT
NO.

DATE February 1985
MODEL 1985 Galant, Mirage
DESCRIPTION The V-ribbed drive belts used on 1985 Galant and Mirage models have several advantages over conventional V-belts. They are more
flexible and thus can follow pulley contours more closely for high power-transmitting efficiency, and their tension loss in service is minimal, which
means they rarely require readjustment once the tension is set correctly. In order to maximize these advantages, accurate adjustment of belt tension is
extremely important. Please follow the procedure in this bulletin to obtain correct and accurate adjustment.
The specifications in this bulletin supplement those given in the service manuals. Note that the specifications given in this bulletin are for a) new belts
that are being installed and tensioned for the first time; b) used belts (a used belt is any belt that has been run for five minutes or more); and c) a range of
tension values that con be used to determine whether a used belt needs to be adjusted.
FIGURE 1
ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE AND SPECIFICATIONS
1.
Inspect the belt installation to make sure it is properly aligned on the pulley as indicated in Fig. 1.
2.
For a new belt, loosen the alternator support and brace bolts, and while pushing on the belt at a point halfway between the water pump pulley and
alternator pulley (Fig. 2) with a force of 22 lbs., move the alternator to obtain deflection "L" in Table 1. If using a belt tension gauge, take the
tension reading ("T", Table 1) at point "A".
FIGURE 2
Tighten the bolts to the values shown in Fig. 2.
3.
For a used belt, compare belt deflection or tension with the specifications in Table II. If adjustment is needed, adjust as described in Step 2.
