PURPOSE
This bulletin provides repair information for seized or worn automatic free wheel hubs and corrects the Service Manual clearance specification for the
drive shaft end play on 1990 and 1991 Monteros.
DESCRIPTION
If the 4wd light stays on all the time or does not light at all, or if the front hubs make a rumbling sound, the front automatic free wheel hub brakes may be
worn or seized due to insufficient end play in the drive shafts.
CORRECTIVE PROCEDURE
This condition can usually be corrected by disassembling the hubs and replacing hub brakes A and B. This operation is described on Page 26-18 in the
1990 Montero Service Manual.
The drive shaft end play must be adjusted to 0.4 - 0.5 mm (0.016 - 0.020 in). This operation is described on Page 26-16 in the 1990 Montero Service
Manual.
