HIGH STEERING EFFORT
PURPOSE
Some affected vehicles may exhibit higher than normal steering effort and a clinking noise from the power steering gear box during low speed turning.
This is caused by incorrect positioning of the power steering gear box on the outer bracket, due to a gap between the bracket and the bolt collar.
To eliminate this condition, install an appropriate size washer between the power steering gear box outer bracket and the bolt collar as described in this
bulletin. A Power Steering Repair Kit, which contains a spacer, three washers, three bolts, and three self-locking nuts, will be automatically shipped to
each dealer with this bulletin. Additional kits are available through the MMSA Tech Line.

1997 Montero Sport models produced before 3/14/97
PROCEDURE
1.
Raise the driver side front wheel of the vehicle.
2.
Remove the side cover of the driver side front wheel housing.
3.
Remove the undercover assembly.
4.
Remove the three power steering gear box tightening bolts and nuts.
