M/T SHIFT LEVER RATTLE
PURPOSE
A rattling noise from the shift lever may be heard when driving. The rattle is caused by excessive free play inside the control lever. Improved production
processes have eliminated the free play by using the installation procedure described in this bulletin.
To eliminate the noise, replace the control lever using the installation procedure in this bulletin.
Check your dealership's stock to ensure that affected vehicles are repaired prior to customer delivery. Start the engine and increase engine speed to
between 2500 and 3000 rpm. Listen for a rattling noise from the shift lever.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1997-98 Montero Sport models equipped with 4G64 engine and manual transmission (ES models) produced before 7/19/97
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the floor console as described in Group 52A of the appropriate service manual.
2. Shift the control lever to Neutral, and remove the control lever assembly with the extension shaft.
3. Place the control lever assembly in a vise and remove the extension shaft. The extension shaft will be re-used.
IMPORTANT:
Reinstall as described below. Do not install the new control lever assembly in a vise.
4. Install a new control lever assembly (listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin) to the extension housing cover.
5. Apply Loctite(R) Removable Strength Thread-locker Blue-242(R)(# 24200) or equivalent to the extension shaft threads.
