SUBJECT:
WRINKLES IN SIDE STEP MOULDING
PURPOSE
Some vehicles may have wrinkle-type marks in the side step moulding which were caused by the moulding being bent during factory installation. This
condition has been corrected in production since 12/3/98.
The side step moulding must be removed and replaced. This bulletin contains specific instructions for removing the moulding adhesive and installing the
new moulding.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1999 Montero Sport Limited models equipped with 3.5L engine produced before 12/3/98 only
PROCEDURE
1.
Remove the side step moulding. Refer to page 51-15 in the 1999 Montero Sport service manual.
2.
Remove the adhesive residue from the side step moulding attaching surface as follows:
a.
Wipe off excess residue with a cloth dampened with 3M Adhesive Cleaner 8215 or equivalent.
b.
Use the 3M "Stripe Off Wheel" 07498 or equivalent to carefully remove any remaining adhesive residue. Attach the wheel to any 3/8" drill
with a maximum operating speed of 2,500 rpm. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, using care to prevent damaging the side step surface.
c.
Remove as much adhesive residue as possible from the slot where the moulding was installed into the rear area of the side step. This area is
very difficult to access, so some residue may remain.
3.
Apply a uniform coat of 3M Adhesive Promoter 6396 to the side step moulding attaching surface.
CAUTION:
USE CARE TO PREVENT BENDING THE MOULDING DURING INSTALLATION.
4.
Remove the backing paper from the new moulding and install it carefully to the side step.
