SUBJECT:
ATF LEVEL GAUGE
PURPOSE
This bulletin contains information concerning a new, improved automatic transmission fluid (ATF) level gauge which is now available for certain
1999-2000 model year Montero Sport vehicles.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Beginning with February 29, 2000 vehicle production, a new automatic transmission fluid (ATF) gauge was introduced for the Montero Sport. This new
gauge (dipstick) is a blade type rather than the wire type original. The new gauge should make checking the ATF easier. The new gauge, p/n MR553359,
is interchangeable with the original wire-type gauge used in 1999 and 2000.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1999-2000 Montero Sport built up to February 28, 2000
PROCEDURE
Make sure you follow these procedures when checking the ATF level:
1.
Drive the vehicle until the fluid temperature reaches the normal operating range (70 - 80 degrees C [158 - 176 degrees F]).
NOTE:
Use the MUT-II scan tool to check the ATF temperature. Refer to page 23A-43, ATF Temperature Sensor check, in the 1999 or 2000 Montero Sport
service manual (MEDIC Document Info. No. M2310-132-0069-02).
2.
Check that the fluid level is at the "HOT" marks on the dipstick.
CAUTION
1.
When the ATF level is higher than the "HOT" mark on the dipstick, the ATF can overheat during driving, resulting in transmission damage.
2.
If the ATF level is low, hydraulic pressure in the transmission will drop, resulting in delayed shifting and slipping of the internal clutches and
brakes.
NOTE:
The "COLD" mark is for reference only The "HOT" mark is the standard area where correct ATF level is measured.
