4. Pump discharge pressure control (pressure relief)

As the pump discharge pressure increases, the pressure applied to the base of the relief valve also increases. When this pressure reaches a
specified level, the valve defeats the force of the spring and opens to allow fluid to flow back to the intake port. In this way, the discharge
pressure is controlled so that the power steering fluid does not flow to the steering gear at a pressure which is greater than the specified
pressure.
