OIL LEAK AT FREEWHEEL ENGAGE SWITCH
PURPOSE
This bulletin contains information concerning a possible oil leak from the freewheel engage switch on the front differential carrier of the 2001 model
year Montero.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Symptom
An oil leak may originate from the freewheel engage switch on the front differential carrier.
Cause
The switch may develop a crack between the resinous portion of the switch and the metal switch body. This crack may be caused by residual/thermal
stresses inside the switch.
Remedy
Replace the freewheel engage switch with a new improved countermeasure switch. There is no part number change for the new improved switch. You
must inspect the lot number on the new switch to make sure you have the countermeasure switch. DO NOT use a switch produced before 5/15/2000.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2001 Montero built before May 31, 2000
PROCEDURE
1.
Remove the original freewheel engage switch.
2.
Install the new switch. Referring to the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin, inspect the lot number of the new switch you are
installing to make sure it is the improved type.
3.
Torque the switch to 25 ± 5 Nm (22 ± 4 ft-lbs).
4.
Check the differential oil level and add if necessary.
