Propeller Shaft - Vibration Between 40 to 50 mph
No: TSB-00-25-001
DATE: September, 2000
MODEL: 2001 Montero
SUBJECT:
PROPELLER SHAFT VIBRATION
PURPOSE
Some affected vehicles may experience a heavy, low-frequency vibration in the steering wheel, seats, and/or vehicle body when driving 40-50 mph or
60-70 mph or higher speeds. This condition may be the result of improperly balanced wheels/tires, or an improperly balanced rear propeller shaft. To
reduce the vibration, follow the procedure in this bulletin.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2001 Montero models produced before 5/29/00
PROCEDURE
1.
Obtain details of the customer's complaint regarding the nature of the vibration (at what speeds, etc.) Before attempting repairs, it is VERY
IMPORTANT to test drive the vehicle to verify the symptoms. If vibration or brake pulsation occurs during braking, repair/replace brake
components as needed.
2.
Balance the wheels/tires, referring to the key points for wheel mounting in TSB-00-31-003.
3.
Test drive the vehicle again to confirm whether the vibration has been reduced or eliminated. If the vibration persists, replace the rear propeller
shaft as described in Steps 4 - 6 of this bulletin.
4.
Before removing the original rear propeller shaft, make an alignment mark on the differential companion flange, parallel with the white decal on
the shaft. (If an alignment mark has already been made at the factory, you do not make an additional mark.)
CAUTION
To prevent scratching the new shaft during installation, wrap it in the protective bubble wrap provided in the repair kit. Do not drop, shock, or
scratch the new shaft. If the shaft is dropped, it must be replaced as it could be internally damaged.
5.
Replace the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Group 25 in the 2001 Montero Service Manual for shaft installation procedures. Observe all propeller
shaft handling instructions on page 25-10 of the service manual.
