Recall - Wire Harness Corrosion
No.: SR-03-002
DATE: June, 2003
MODEL: See below
SUBJECT:
WIRING HARNESS CORROSION
- SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN
PURPOSE
Water may enter the front floorboard area from openings in the side sill or upper dash area. This water may collect under the front seat(s) and cause
electrical corrosion to occur in the harness connectors that contain the wiring for the seat belt pre-tensioner, side airbag impact sensors (if equipped),
stop lamps, and rear oxygen sensor. Electrical corrosion of the front harness could cause the seat belt pre-tensioner or side airbag to malfunction and/or
the brake lamps not to illuminate or to falsely illuminate. In addition, this condition may also cause the SRS light to illuminate. Electrical corrosion of the
rear heated oxygen sensor harness could cause the sensor to malfunction, set a diagnostic trouble code and illuminate the MIL.
Seal any openings in the side sill and upper dash areas and inspect floor harness connectors for signs of electrical corrosion. Remove any moisture and
replace the right and left floor harnesses if there are any signs of damage or corrosion. If the rear heated oxygen sensor harness shows any signs of
corrosion, install a subharness and replace the rear heated oxygen sensor.
NOTE:
If you previously inspected the vehicle as described in ATIN-03-SR-002, you must still perform this recall procedure on the vehicle, regardless of
your previous findings.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
2003 Outlander vehicles produced between 8/20/02 - 4/11/03
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
A letter will be sent to all owners of affected vehicles. The letter tells the owner to bring their vehicle to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have the side
sills and dash panel inspected for openings that may allow water leakage, and the connectors inspected for signs of electrical corrosion. A sample copy of
the customer notification letter appears in Attachment A of this bulletin.
NOTE:
California vehicle owners will receive a slightly different notification letter instructing them that the dealer will provide a Vehicle Emission Recall
Proof of Correction Form after the recall campaign procedure is complete. This form is required by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
