Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Manual Steering
Removal and Replacement
1.
Remove clamp bolt connecting steering shaft and steering gear.
2.
Using tool MB990635 or equivalent, disconnect tie rod and pitman arm from relay rod.
3.
Remove steering gear downward from body frame.
4.
Using tool MB990809 or equivalent, remove pitman arm from cross shaft.
5.
Reverse procedure to install.
Disassembly

1.
Remove jam nut, then using tool No. MB990809-01 or equivalent, separate pitman arm from steering gear, Fig. 5. Drain lubricant.
2.
Remove dust cover attaching bolts, then the dust cover.
3.
Remove breather plug.
4.
Remove adjusting cover locknut, then the attaching bolts with washers.
5.
Remove side cover, then the packing.
6.
Remove cross shaft, then the adjusting cover cap.
7.
Remove adjusting cover locknut, then the adjusting cover.
8.
Remove end cover retaining bolts, then the end cover.
9.
Remove adjusting shims and retain to facilitate assembly.
10.
Remove bearing (16), then the mainshaft assembly.
11.
Remove second bearing (18), then the oil seal (19).
12.
Separate oil seal (20) from gearbox housing.
Inspection
1.
Check ball nut for smooth rotation and endplay.
2.
Check bearing for seizure and discoloration, then for a rough rolling surface.
