Adjust retainer if necessary and measure pinion rotating torque and rack sliding force. Install locknut and torque with Mainshaft Nut Wrench
J26348 to 29-43 ft.lbs.

Center the rack in the housing (Figure 32).

Install the rear housing cover cap with the pointer facing toward the rear of the vehicle, and mark the pointer position on the rear housing.

Install the long cylinder tube and breather hose. Orient the cylinder end housing as required and torque the cylinder lock nut to 58-101 ft.lbs. using
Cylinder Lock Nut Wrench J28820.

Slide boots into place and install boot clamps, but do not tighten at this time. Connect breather hose to boots. Short cylinder tube will be installed
after gear is in vehicle.

39.

Remove steering gear from Power Steering Stand.

Steering Gear Installation and Bleeding

1.

Install steering gear in vehicle.

2.

Line up the pointer on the rear housing cover cap with the mark on the rear housing to center the rack.

3.

Hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position. Install the lower steering column joint on the pinion shaft. Install short cylinder tube.

4.

Remove as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir using an oil suction gun.

5.

Fill system with new ATF and bleed as follows:

Raise front of vehicle until wheels clear ground.

With engine off, quickly turn steering wheel from right lock to left lock seven or eight times or until fluid level in reservoir stops
dropping and air bubbles no longer appear in fluid.

Start engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Then rev engine under no load two or three times.

With engine idling, quickly turn steering wheel from right lock to left lock seven or eight times or until fluid level in reservoir stops
dropping and air bubbles no longer appear in fluid.

CAUTION: While bleeding, do not hold steering wheel against right or left lock for more than 15 seconds.

6.

Slide the boots off the end of the rack and check for leaks at either end of the rack. If no leaking or seepage is apparent, coat the grooves on
the end of the rack with sealer, install the boots and tighten the clamps. If the gear is leaking after bleeding, it should be removed and
replaced with a new assembly.

7.

After the gear is installed, test drive the vehicle. Mark steering wheel position while driving the vehicle straight ahead.

8.

Reset the front toe and steering wheel angle.
