Use the Pinion Bearing Race Remover J25749-A to remove the old oil seal and back-up collar from the inner tube assembly (Figure 11).

Use Bushing and Needle Bearing Remover J29369-1 (smallest one in set) to remove the old pinion housing oil seal (Figure 12).

18.

Remove and discard the following parts:

oil seal in rear housing cover

^

O-ring on rear housing cover

^

O-ring in rear housing

^

2 O-rings on cylinder assembly

^

O-ring inside pinion housing (mates with inner tube)

^

2 lock plates

CLEANING AND INSPECTION
1.

Clean all remaining parts in solvent to remove oil, dirt and grease. Blow dry with compressed air. Do not expose new parts and seals to solvent.

Inspect sealing surfaces of pinion shaft. If sealing surfaces are noticeably damaged, the steering gear must be replaced. NOTE: It is normal to have
discoloration on the bore of the pinion housing to match the four teflon sealing rings on the pinion. Do not replace the gear because of these
discolorations.

3.

Inspect sealing surfaces of rack. If there are scratches, pits or score marks deep enough to feel with a fingernail, the steering gear must be replaced.
If the sealing surfaces are not damaged, the gear may be rebuilt.

Steering Gear Reassembly

1.

Cut the sheet of mylar film (included with bulletin) into 6 equal-sized pieces (4.25" x 3.66") (Figure 13). Use one piece to install the new oil seal
onto the rack and save the others for future installations. A piece of mylar film is also enclosed in each rebuild seal kit.
